Dogs in Space (Expanded) (1986)

Updated 07/20/2011: A generous visitor supplied me with a new rip of the Japanese CD, so the album tracks of this upload have been updated with much improved sound quality over the old vinyl rip. Enjoy!
Michael Hutchence of INXS fame stars as the lead singer of Dogs in Space, a band partying and gigging and trying to make it. Based on the story of local band The Ears, it captures the turbulent feel of what the 1979/1980 Australian Little Band Scene must have been like, just as punk was moving into new wave. A remarkable movie with an incredible soundtrack, full of alternately well-known and relatively unknown bands from that unique time and place.

The soundtrack for this film is a rarity. The CD version of the soundtrack was briefly issued in only two countries back in '86. The German release mixed in dialogue from the movie and the tracks segue into each other. This mix is much more common than the Japanese release, which I've posted here previously. I prefer the Japanese release version because it presents the songs individually without segue ways or dialogue. The downside of the Japanese CD is that two of the songs are presented in censored "Instrumental" versions, although it does feature a longer, more complete version of Michael Hutchence's "The Green Dragon" narrative.
As this is one of my favorite soundtracks, I thought it would be a cool to create a custom expanded compilation. I started with a clean Japanese vinyl rip of the soundtrack that I found on BitTorrent site mininova a year-and-a-half ago. While the rip is only 160kbps, it was Fraunhofer encoded, so it sounds surprisingly good, with no noticeable artifacts. It was posted along with a rip of the only DVD release this movie has seen, an awful cropped and hazy bootleg from England.
Looking at the ending credits, I found that there were five songs used in the movie, but not released on the soundtrack: Stamphyl Revega's "Frankie Teardrop," Too Fat to Fit Through the Door's "Skullbrains," Whirlywirld's "Window to the World" and The Birthday Party's "Mr. Clarinet" and "Happy Birthday." Additionally, I also recognized the original Whirlywirld version of "Win/Lose" playing over the end credits. I had The Birthday Party tracks on their Hee-Haw CD and the Whirlywirld tracks are on The Complete Studio Works CD, so they were no problem. As they were never issued, I was forced to rip the Stamphyl Revega and Too Fat to Fit Through the Door tracks direct from the movie.
While watching the film again, I also ran across two short bits of score that I thought would fit nicely in the compilation that I was building, so I ripped those as well. While not credited directly, I assume that Musical Director (and former Whirlywirld member) Ollie Olson created these short instrumental bits and, incidentally, I believe that Stamphyl Revenga is an Ollie Olson pseudonym. The movie rip is in PAL format and, because of that, runs slightly fast at 25 frames per second. This makes the sound slightly pitched. I used BeSweet to correct the speed back to the equivalent of the correct 23.976 framerate before encoding to MP3.
That left the two censored tracks. Fortunately, the uncensored version of Primitive Calculators' "Pumping Ugly Muscle" has been reissued on the 2006 compilation Tales from the Australian Underground Vol 2: 1977-1990. I was able to find this track and the uncensored version of Thrush & the Cunts' "Diseases" on Soulseek. "Diseases" was ripped from the German soundtrack CD and is mostly complete, with a fade-in that clips about the first 16s.
As the original soundtrack was roughly sequenced in the same order that the tracks appear in the film, it made sense to me to do the same with this compilation. This custom expanded compilation adds ten bonus tracks to the original release. Thanks to an anonymous poster, you can read a scan of the original liner notes by clicking here.
On December 10, 2011, I received an unexpected delight in the form of an email from Richard Lowenstein, the director of Dogs in Space. In it, he states:
"As a 50% owner of the DIS Soundtrack copyright you have my blessing!
If anyone tries to scare you into taking it down, please put them onto me..
Thanks again..
RICHARD LOWENSTEIN
GHOST Pictures Pty Ltd"
Following the remaster and reissue of the film on DVD and Blu-ray in Australia, Richard Lowenstein worked to clear the song rights for a soundtrack reissue, but was unable to do so. As he stated himself on December 9, 2012 via the Dogs in Space Facebook page, "Since no-one will allow us to re-issue the soundtrack, I suggest you all 'pirate' away."

wow that's excellent work you've done here collating all the various tracks together.
It's a great movie but I doubt strongly it'll ever get re-released simply from the point of view that all the music used would need a 'litigation of lawyers' to sort out the copyright clearance issues, but you never know..
thanks
rob
Thanks, great work
Wow my favorite movie ever! I have the soundtrack on cassette and vinyl and tried to piece mp3s together it's but nothing as comprehensive as this.
Thank you!!
You continually blow my mind! Thank you.
Thanks for doing this, especially in putting the songs in play order. I do that with all of my soundtracks. I only collect those from the 80s and had this one from another blog, but it sounds like yours is in better condition, especially with the added missing tracks. Glad to replace mine with a better version.
I applaud you.
I had the vinyl (US?) way back when and played the hell out of it. Thanks so much.
I've got this cassette...love the expansion. Thanks

you are brilliant, thanks for he superb write-up and all your efforts to get all these tracks into a collection
Thanks for this, Is so valuable for me, but I can't use the password, I think I got something wrong,
thanks
very nice extended version with the extra bits etc. great thanks for taking the time to do this. i used to have the cassette once upon a time so i'm still hanging out for the uncensored version with all the dialogue crossfading between songs.
Thank you!!! I used to have this soundtrack on tape until it died a tragic death and I've missed it since (what, for 20+ years now??)
wow, its weird to hear these tracks from Ollie Olsen! Granted, I have only heard of him through Goa Trance acts, such as Psyko disko and Shaolin Wooden Men - quite a huge departure from this early stuff, but I really like this album a LOT!
thanks for the great post, and the great blog page you have!
It seems to me you shifted the "uncensored" versions of Diseases and Pumping Ugly Muscle and moved them into the center of your soundtrack and moved to original versions included in the film soundtrack and tagged them on the end.
Also, I have the American LP and the Japanese CD and neither has the Australian LP mixdown with dialogue, etc. I haven't been able to locate the US CD to see if it has the US LP/Japan CD mixdown or the Australian LP mixdown, but my guess is the Japan CD is actually a repressing of the US CD. Anyway -- Great work! Also, the 12" version of "Rooms For The Memory" which is credited as a remix version is exactly the same as the LP/CD version. Furthermore, the Win/Lose version from the soundtrack is also credited as a remix in the soundtrack liner notes. :)
Oh, yeah, and "Anthrax" is an edited version. The full length version is on the Gang of Four LP ... it has about an extra 60 to 120 seconds of lead-in guitar feedback, etc.
Hey, Poz, thanks for the comments! I knew about Gang of Four's "Anthrax" being a bit short. Also, Brian Eno's "Skysaw" is an edit as well, but I decided to leave those the way they appear.
It seemed more logical to include the uncensored versions of "Diseases" and "Pumping Ugly Muscle" in the "main" part of the compilation. I find the "Instrumental" versions to be worthwhile, though, so I wanted to include them and thought throwing them on the end made the most sense.
I'm not so sure about the Ollie Olsen version of "Win/Lose" being a remix of the original Whirlywirld version, though. He may be using some elements of the original, but it sounds more new to me than old. Although, I suppose that with Ollie Olsen doing that whole "one man band" thing, everything he creates could technically be called a "remix" ;-)
As far as I know, there was never an American CD release for Dogs in Space. My American cassette (worn out long ago!) included dialogue, so I just assumed that the US LP did as well.
Thanks v much
wow, thank you so much...one of my fav OST now in mp3. I still have the vinyl full length with and without dialogue. Thanks Again!
Thanx for this but any chance of the Whirlywirld album you mention being posted? Also I don't suppose you have any of his NO material do ypu. When I get my tapes out of storage I have some live gigs of theirs that i recorded and will upload at my blog.
Regards/
I have a cassette version of the "Dogs in Space" soundtrack that is worn thin and no longer plays properly. I really appreciate you not only making the music available in MP3 format, but also filling in those musical gaps that I always had to go back to the video (also worn thin with age and overuse).
Thanks so much for sharing.
Both DVD & remixed CD are due out in September '09
Great news, RML! I'll be more than happy to take this share down if Dogs in Space gets a reissue! Heck, I'll be first in line to buy it!
cheers ! My fave album EVER !!
I always referred to the different releases as the 'black' and 'white' albums as they were originally released with the different colour covers on chase records in OZ. The white being without dialogue and with the instrumental tracks ... the black being with dialogue and with vocals and had a R rating. still trying to find a replacement for the black album as both my cassette and vinyl copies were stolen by a 'friend'.
Cheers for posting :)
Awesome work. I have seen this movie more often than any other by a factor of 10. For years I would take the VHS to every party I attended, and run it on the TV in the background. I have made dozens of pilgrimages to the house in Richmond in various stages of intoxication. have never had the soundtrack, though my mate has it on vinyl.
Hello,
I don't know how relevant this is, but "Ronnie", bass & lead vocals with Marching Girls - True Love, was later known as Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance.
Cheers :)
I've never been able to find a rip of the 'black' version, which I own on LP. It's starts with those immortal words "Hey Mate! Are you from the planet poofter or the planet stupider?" before segueing into 'Dog Food'
But you have done a great job - I guess I'll have to do it myself. Loved the Brendan Perry trivia in the last comment. That's just weird.
thanks so much !!!!a French Hutchence fan xxx
I can't thank you enough for sharing this soundtrack!!!! I have literally been searching for this for YEARS and could only find old cassettes or the Japanese CD for over $200! So THANK YOU...you rock :)

Thought I should share this with you all!!!
Its true, finally!!!

Thanks, I heard about this reissue DVD, Matt! I'm psyched too! Supposedly, they're re-releasing the soundtrack too, but I haven't seen this listed for sale anywhere yet. Of course, if the CD does get reissued, I'll take this share down immediately!
In case you weren't aware, The Ears, the band that the Dogs in Space band was based on (featuring Sam Sejavka, who Michael's character is based on) is playing a gig with the Wreckery at the Espy in St Kilda on Saturday the 29th of August 2009.
I saw them play last Sunday at the Corner and it was a fucking amazing gig. So, I highly recommend it. :)
Oh, that really cool! Too bad I live in the States!
I will have to check them out...must be the front bar yeah, as Black Cab are playing in the Gershwin room that night!
More here.

hi guys, wellI've spent days looking for this original soundtrack, which I was lucky enough to be at the original preview in 1986 on the Gold coast. I had won 2 free tickets to the premier and to my suprise when arriving at the theatre I was given a Promo copy of the soundtrack which had "Not for sale"on it. Cool hey. Sadly I had my record collection stolen in 1991 where I lost some very rare Music I had collected over the years. thanks to Your hard work I now can just about finish replacing the rare albums I lost.
Steve Sullivan
P.S. The dvd is now available if you dont already know(the pirate bay.com)
The soundtrack album was released on Chase Records in February 1987 (CLPX14), featuring several tracks from reformed "little bands" and other contemporary tracks of the time.
The album came in two versions: a censored version in a white sleeve with the band name "Thrush & the Cunts" bowdlerised to "Thrush and the C**ts" and possibly-offensive song vocal tracks removed, and an "R"-rated version in a black sleeve with all band names in full, movie dialogue between the songs and all vocal tracks in full.
Chase Records went out of business soon after and, despite much effort, the record has never been reissued and has remained unavailable since. It is now a collector's item, commanding high prices.
the two-disc DVD of 'dogs in space' is wonderful. bought a copy a few days ago and celebrated with friends on the weekend by giving it a viewing while downing copious amounts of alcohol. played your excellent expanded version of the soundtrack through-out the night too. happy times...thank-you.
BALLARAT!!!
BALLARAT, I'm glad that I helped in some small way to make your party a success!
that's a brilliant bit of work there, I remember seeing the black cover version in the shops for a short while after the film came out, I was so miffed with myself that a didn't snap one up in time. I have a question, I only have ubuntu linux on my computer and when I tried to extract the archive it extracted but just extracted a blank! any idea what I'm doing wrong? any help is much appreciated.
I have been searching for his album for SOOOOO long. I uploaded it, but the password hates me for some reason... Can you pretty please help me out? I would be forever grateful!
like everybody else, this has been something I have been looking out for an eternity to find. Thankyou from myself and a mate that will be extatic about this. He has not stopped talking about this and pointing out the house in Melbourne since "back in the days". Awesome, Awesome job. If karma is real, you deserve to win lottery for this post. Cheers
The commentary track on the new 2 DVD Dogs in Space menitons a forthcomingCD soundtrack reissue expaned to 2 CDs and will included ( amonst others) Tequila by MH & Dogs in Space ( as seen in the party scene)
I posted the soundtrack on my blog back in april last year or something,
its on of my all time favs, an online mate tiped me off to your expanded version, Im excited what a fantastic idea. I have linked to your post from a post I have done today on the max q singles.
I shall put you in my fav blogs links, thanks for the great work
Anyone else getting an error when opening the .rar file? :(
This is one of my all time favorite movies! and soundtracks. So cool that it's up here!
I got a copy of the bleeped tape in Canada years ago and left it in OZ when I moved back to the states from Melbourne.
Had bad copies made for me here and there and lost the last one a Melbum DJ friend made me too.
Haven't tried to download it yet, but hope it works!
Thanks!
looking for ages for this rar wonderful piece of music.
Thanx soooo much for this fantastic work.
regards mdt
This is my christmas present. It's been years waiting for this. Thank you.
Are you from the planet POOFTAH or the planet STUPITAH?
Such a stellar effort! Thanks so much.
After seeing the movie all those years ago I rushed to my local record store and bought the vinyl. To finally have it on my mp3 player is fantastic!
‘Hey dogface, show us your snatch!’
I'm so thankful you did this. Its such a shame this wonderful movie has not been re-released for us in the U.S.
Thank you very much, all the best from Italy!
Thank you so much for putting this together and sharing it. This was my favorite movie and soundtrack as I was growing up. I had the cassette tape but it disappeared, as tapes do. The film is absolutely brilliant.
I downloaded it and am about to extract it using RARMonkey but it says I need a password to extract the files. Please help me if you can. Thank you,
Mitzi
Mitzi, the password is directly below the download link...
thank you. sweet memories. tezoire666
sank you vely mach!
i've been looking for this soundtrack for YEARS... had it on cassette in high school and missed these songs terribly. THANK YOU!
You are an absolute star, thank you so so much for doing this, x
I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this. I've been looking for this soundtrack for years. Thank You!
Fantastic work...thanks so much! An old girl friend gave me her copy on tape years ago knowing how into it I was, but the additional material in this is awesome. JB's still has the DVD listed on their website, but showing as not available. Was/is it a remaster? The hope remains...
Omg dude, you are a life saver! I've been hunting for this soundtrack for like, a year. Thank you so much!
I was lucky enough to tape Dogs in Space when it was on TV as a youngster. I loved it so much I made my own soundtrack tape by hooking my walkman up to the telly. This is so much, much better. Thanks!
Note that the Blue Ray version is now available from various sites in the UK and you can get it on DVD too which I am about to do. Yipee!
great work :hail
i bought & still have the Lp when it was first released & have in Cassette. brings back memories listening to this.
cheers:
Yet another Thanks from me. I used to have the vinyl soundtrack way back when, circa 1990 or so. Whatever happened to that I have no clue. I'm happy to have your expanded version . . . it'll be my first time listening to the soundtrack in well over a dozen years.
DVD from dvdsource yet to arrive, on order with supplier they say. 6 weeks is too long so have opted to spend a few extra pounds with play.com. Arrival due in 3-4 days. Yipee again!
My favourite track from the film was always singing along to Tequila by the champs, unless I'm going crazy and this is another film? Is it too short a snippet to make it onto the soundtrack I wonder?
It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, I didn't pull "Tequila" because the scene was getting cross-cut with another, so the music was "chopped up." I remember being disappointed at the time that I couldn't get it in!
Thank you so much for this - an amazing job. Love the movie and appreciate all you've done to complete the soundtrack!
Thanks so much - worth it just for the original version of Win/Lose!
DVD finally arrived from play.com reseller. Took more like a month, but well worth the wait.
It's an Australian All Region edition with a second disc full of lovely features.
Huge thanks to you Kevin for making the wait bearable with the soundtrack.
Thank you so much!:)
Hey I really wanna know what the song is on the end credits...it's so awesome....can you tell me? :-)
It's been a lot of years since I've watched it, but I believe Michael Hutchence's "Rooms for the Memory" plays during the end credits.
ok. Its the song right after that...it sounds like iggy...oh it must be his take of win lose. i think i might have wasted your time :(
No problem! Enjoy!
I uploaded the song that passes during the end credits...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjmnGpxZVGs
Can you tell me if it's Ollie Olson? Or Iggy Pop?
cheers
great version
Ah! That's the original 1980 version of Whirlywirld's "Win/Lose". It's not on the original soundtrack release, as the 1986 remake version by Ollie Olson was included instead. However, you're in luck, as I've included it as a bonus track in this expanded compilation! Enjoy!
I've never noticed before that Whirlywirld's Win/Lose had its bass and percussion ripped off in Iggy Pop's Repo Man - I wonder if he gave them a writing credit...
Thank you SO much! i had the Dogs in Space sdtk on Cassette Tape for years and loved it and couldn't find it anywhere on CD. this made my day. _ DJ Jenochka
Hi! I was thrilled to find this, but when I try to open the .rar file it says "The structure of the archive is damaged (Error #17540)". I tried C&P the password, & typing it, nothing makes a difference. I'd LOVE any help, I really miss this music! Thanks-
Hey, Denise, sorry you're having troubles. Error #17540 is a StuffIt error. Check out the Please Read This First section at the top of the page. You need to use UnRarX when extracting from password-protected RAR archives.
By the way, you may want to re-download the RAR file, as I just updated it with noticeably improved sound! The LP vinyl rip has been replace with a new CD rip!
Your comment reminded me to upload the new version, so thanks! Enjoy!
OH, thanks! I did download UnRarX, and somehow I just assumed my computer would use it to open a rar file- macs are usually good that way.
I will download the new file- and thanks so much, I have wanted this for years, since my original cassette was finally shredded after relentless play!
Thanks *again* !!! :-)
Love it and thank you! Great replacement for my LP and VHS of movie. Thank you again.
Julian
thanks,
gracias por su excelente aporte,MICHAEL ES EL MEJOR......
Hey, everyone. Check out the must-read review of Dogs in Space over at Fuckshit!
http://fshomevideo.blogspot.com/2011/11/dogs-in-space.html
Do it!
FYI Dogs In Space director Richard Lowenstein has just posted to Facebook *encouraging* people to come here and download your unofficial expanded soundtrack. They were trying to put together an official, expanded reissue but that has proved impossible.
That's pretty awesome!
If you want to go back to the original band & get their music, there is a compilation of "The Ears best and/or most notorious material. Dogs in Space is the only extant album from the band" at http://theears.bandcamp.com/album/dogs-in-space
Oh, thank you, thank you! I have been trying to track down my cassette tape of this, but haven't had luck. Now I can put it on my iPod! I've been wanting to hear the Green Dragon story for years!!!!
Thank you so much!!! I loved the music of that movie!
Thanks for this compilation Kevin! I'm another one across from the DiS facebook, I'd been hanging out for an official version, but here we are instead... cheers!
Just saw this movie for the first time last week. Thx for the soundtrack! Awesome songs. The whole movie is streaming free on ABC iView at the moment for Aussie viewers...
So this is a great 'expanded' version and all, but where can I get a copy of the original dialogue infected r-rated version? It was much better IMHO.
Thank you so much! I have this on LP but no record player--it's great to listen to it again.
Hi, any chance of a re-up please?
Share has been uploaded to MediaFire and is available now!
Checking around online for the DVD I came across the BluRay of Dogs In Space and it's not super expensive, $35-$40 average, and it will play in any region as it is a BluRay. I'm in the states along with you K.S. so I was pumped to find the film on BluRay...finally! Thanks for the awesome share!
This is one of my all time favorite films and soundtracks. Thank you!
Thanks an awful lot!!!
And huge kudos to Mr. Lowenstein; not only for gracing the theaters with this great movie, but also for his POV toward reluctant copyright holders!
FYI, I had a similar case. I was so much scouring the net for getting a CD re-release (if it exists) from James T. Pursey's 1983 alt-wave masterpiece "Revenge Is Not The Password". YES FOR MONEY. But of course, I wanted the sounds AS-IS. And what did I find instead? A CD, yes, but having all songs RE-MIXED in a horribly ugly fashion. Up to this year (which is 2012), the original has been vinyl-only.
What did I do in the end? Pirate the album and get it - in fact - illegally off a blog. But did I want to be a pirate in the first place? No, I wanted to BUY it. But alas, they may shove their stinking remixes into their butts. If I pay money I have the right to get an ORIGINAL, not a f*g reproduction.
See, that's how "sane" people can turn to pirates. When record companies attempt to play the "cat-and-mouse" game with them.
Share has been re-uploaded to MediaFire and is available now!
Hi, the current link to Mediafire is not working - 'Permission denied, material copyrighted' - any chance you could upload again, or direct me as to where I can get this soundtrack? Cheers! Leon
Thanks for the heads up, Leon. Share has been re-uploaded to MediaFire and is available now! Hopefully it won't get taken down again!
Hi, the Mediafire link is not working again. Any cahnce you could upload it again?
Cheers
Share has been re-uploaded to MediaFire and is available now!
thanks thanks thanks!
My turn to say thanks! I still have my original cassette from the 1980's. After my third viewing of Dogs on ABC last night, I had to have the other Win Lose. Now I have it! Thank you for your efforts.
This movie influenced my perception of Melbourne and Australian culture, enough to move me from country Queensland to Melbourne. Interesting times!
Hi! Maybe you know where I can download the film - "We're Livin' on Dog Food" ?
According to Wikipedia - We're Living on Dogfood (DVD documentary) was included in the DVD re-release of film "Dogs in Space" in 2009.
