The music albums I post here are free! I use Megaupload, a free online storage service. Installing their toolbar is not required! Here's what you need to do to download an album:

Click the DOWNLOAD link at the bottom of the post. This will launch the Megaupload page in a separate tab. There's a four letter code there that you have to type in to continue. This will take you to another page with a 45 second countdown. Once complete, the timer will turn into a big black button that says "Regular download". Click that button to download the album.

The albums I post here are stored as compressed RAR archives. WinZip and StuffIt can't open these RAR archives because they are password protected. For Windows, install 7-Zip; on Mac, install UnRarX. Both are freeware, spyware-free and are designed to extract files from password protected RAR archives. Once installed, open the RAR archive and you will be prompted for the password. Type in:

Be sure to type the password exactly, with no extra spaces. If the password is wrong, the files may still extract, but they'll be corrupt and won't play! If you have any problems, feel free to email me and I'll do my best to help!

A Brief History of Ambient Volume 2: Imaginary Landscapes (1974-1993)

In December of 1993, Virgin Records released a second two-disc collection of ambient music as a follow-up to the commercially and critically successful first volume in the series A Brief History of Ambient. Interestingly, the liner notes state that the series title is "an affectionate nod in the direction of Stephen Hawking."

Once again culled exclusively from the Virgin vaults, this second collection is a bit more narrowly focused than its predecessor. On some level, though, it is mostly "more of the same," with many of the same artists (Brian Eno, Amorphous Androgynous, Tangerine Dream, David Sylvian, The Grid, Robert Fripp, Gong, Edgar Froese and Holger Czukay) making another appearance. 'Course, "more of the same" with artists of this caliber isn't really a bad thing. While Volume 1 did feature a track by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, it is Volume 2 that sports a more international roster, with tracks by Baaba Maal [Senegal], Ryuichi Sakamoto [Japan], The Guo Brothers [China], Prince Far I [Jamaica], The Dmitri Pokrovski Ensemble [Russia] and The Tsinandali Choir [Georgia]. Fans of the bands Gong and Soft Cell will be interested to note the solo track by founding member Daevid Allen. Also of probable interest to some is a track by U2's guitarist The Edge from the soundtrack to the obscure Euro thriller Captive.

Check out some fan-made clips featuring Tangerine Dream's "Rubycon Part 2," Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Nuages," Penguin Cafe Orchestra's "Wildlife" and The Verve's "Endless Life":

If you enjoyed my posting of the first volume, you're bound to enjoy this as well. Stay tuned for Volumes 3 and 4...

Thanks Kevin, all unpacked fine for me. Great site, love many of your selections and many I own too - keep on, keeping on!

Used to be into this ambient stuff, albeit briefly, way back 25+ years ago - thanks for the serene memories...at least those I recall!

Hi Kevin, thanks for posting. Some great stuff here.

Really strange, but I get an error too when trying to unpack Vol 2. Vol 1 worked fine. I've tried the recommended UnRarX (on a Mac) and get the message "Encrypted file: CRC failed in A Brief History of Ambient Volume 2 (1974-1993)"

Very odd.
