Dogs in Space (1986)

Michael Hutchence of INXS fame stars as the lead singer of Dogs in Space, a band partying and gigging and trying to make it. Based on the story of local band The Ears, it turbulently captures the feel of what the 1979/1980 Australian music scene must have been like, just as punk was moving into new wave. A remarkable movie with an incredible soundtrack, full of well-known and relatively unknown bands from that time and place. In fact, it's the only "period" movie that I can think of that actually makes me wish I was there when it was happening.

Unfortunately, the soundtrack for this one is very difficult to find. A CD version of the soundtrack was only issued in two countries back in '86. The German disc contains dialogue from the movie and the tracks segue into each other. It's this version that was also released worldwide on vinyl. This mix is much more common than the Japanese version, which I'm posting here. I prefer this version because it presents the songs uncut and complete, without segue ways or dialogue.
Finding a rip of any version is tough and originals CDs regularly sell on eBay for well over US$100. The only good rip I've found was on BitTorrent site mininova a few months ago. It was posted with a rip of the only DVD released for this film worldwide, a reportedly awful cropped hazy release from England. It's an absolute mystery to me why this hasn't been remastered and rereleased on CD and DVD. I cleaned up the tags, correcting the artist, song title and release year info.
This rip is only 160kbps, but was at least Fraunhofer encoded, so it sounds surprisingly good, with no noticeable artifacts. I've tried for years to obtain an original of this CD, but have never had luck. This does a good job of taking its place until I do.

Wow! An early Christmas present! Thank you!
Thanks for this extremely rare gem!
Thank you for this rip, so that my vinyl copy can take a rest. My cover art is quite different from yours with scenes from the film on it.
The liner notes are essential to this historical release, and can be found in two images here:

About Dogs in Space, Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable, so Laika the dog, like the doomed kids in the film, was doomed to die from the beginning.
Laika's death sparked a debate across the globe on the mistreatment of animals to advance science. You CAN do something.
Thanks for the great info, anon. And thanks for the scan links. Much appreciated!

Thank you from Tokyo. Always liked this version of Ollie Olsen's song, which was originally released in his old band, Whirlywirld.
Thanks for making this rarity available. Congrats on a classy blog, the care you put into it is quite apparent.
Cheers, SamIam
Thank you ...thank you...and thank you again. One of the best movie soundfracks ever! Nice blog too!!
that rar is encrypted
That's true, it is. All of my uploads here are. The password, as always, is just below the download link. If you're having trouble opening the RAR archive, be sure to read the note on the right-hand side of the page:
"Please Read This First!"
I had an old cassette version that died in a horrible car crash. Nice to have a chance to relive a strange moment
This is quite different to the cassette version I had. Most of the lyrics are missing from Diseases, and the bits from the movie have been removed. All, the Green Dragon is longer on this one.
thanks so much looking for this
cheers
wow things u find by accident! I have been lookin for this for a long time!An avid dogs fan & the music is still as strong today. Oh the memories ( or those bits that are remembered)from times long gone - emo & the beckham 'mowhawk' of today are only illusions compared to the early 80's punk, goth etc scene. Thank u 4 your efforts, much appreciated1
It's a well worn comment, but again, thanks! Like other I just stumbled across this. I was trying to find some information on the 12inch of 'Rooms for the Memory' (which I used to own but "loaned" to someone and never saw again). I was very happy to find this as it seems you can't get this for love or money..now, if I could just find a copy of the record from the old Australia ABC radio show "Ambience" I could die happy! Thanks again!
Thanks for posting this. "Rooms" is one my favourite songs, and I've never been able to find something to replace my badly scratched vinyl single.
Thank you SO MUCH! So hard to find this in such good quality! Do you know if this was taken from one of the rare CDs or from vinyl? Thanks again!
Thanks So Much, I had been looking for this for so many years.
I live outside of Oz so this brings me back many memorys.
Good Luck and God Bless
Matt
